TNOA PG Crash Course

 
The 1st TNOA Postgraduate Crash Course was held on 9, 10, and 11 April 2021, at Madras Medical College. The Organising Chairman Prof. N. Deen Muhammad Ismail and Organising secretary Prof. M. Antony Vimal Raj were instrumental in conducting this academic extravaganza, which was most welcome by the exam going postgraduates. Covid- 19 pandemic posed a great challenge in educational activities in most teaching institutions and this course served to benefit those who were at loss with regards to coaching for Orthopaedic postgraduate practical examination. The total number of registrations was 220 including Postgraduates from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. To comply with government norms for maintaining social distancing and to avoid exposure to patients the venue selected was the Physiology lecture hall in the Medical College Campus. 
 
The 3 days’ academic feast included 6 sessions covering all regional topics in clinical orthopaedics. 11 lectures in total by eminent faculties in respective fields including the star speaker Prof. Mathew Varghese, from St. Stephen’s Hospital, New Delhi, whose lecture captivated all those present in the hall. Another attractive feature of the event was the clinical case presentation by Postgraduates and live interaction with the audience and expert panelists which served to be a brainstorming one for all those who attended. A total of 20 case presentations took place, which included 4 hip long cases with a detailed discussion of clinical examination techniques. Other topics that were covered included spine, orthopaedic infection, non-union, nerve injury including brachial plexus injuries, short case discussion on elbow, shoulder, knee, and orthopaedic oncology. Ortho-Radiology, Orthopaedic Pathology, Orthotics; Prosthetics and Implants; Instruments were also covered with lectures.
 
Another important highlight was the painstaking effort of TNOA President Prof. M. Antony Vimal Raj to release an event booklet that will serve as a ready reckoner for all exam-going postgraduates. It was released by our Past President Prof. Dr. R. Sivakumar and the 1 st copy was received by Prof. Dr. Mathew Varghese. The TNOA President Prof. M. Antony Vimal Raj also issued a copy of the official journal of TNOA, namely JOJS (Journal of orthopaedics and joint surgery) announcing that indexation for the same has been completed with Index Copernicus. All faculty who participated in the program were felicitated with a memento and certificate. The past presidents of TNOA who participated in the event were specially honoured by the current President Prof. M. Antony Vimal Raj. The office bearers of TNOA were also honoured with memento and certificate. Tamil Nadu State Medical Council had awarded 6 CME credit hours for the program through online registration of CME and the same was awarded to all participants who registered separately for the credit hours. Speakers were awarded 7 credit hours. Finally, the program concluded with felicitation of the organizing team including Organising Co-Secretaries Dr. S. Cheralathan, Dr. G. Nagarajan, Dr. T. Gopi, and the postgraduates from the Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Madras Medical College whose untiring efforts made the program a grand success. All exam-going PGs were given examination kits which was very well appreciated. All PGs were motivated to become members of TNOA and 12 PGs became new members of TNOA and IOA.
